My slightly mad mother in law once made the mistake of mentioning a personal goal to ride from London to Paris to Nikki. She should have known better than this and during her illness promises were made to make the goal a reality.

Carol, Alan, (Mum and Dad) Gill and Chris (Aunt and Uncle) have embraced the challenge and with a little twist on the original plan will set off from Paris on the 15th May. They aim to travel the nearly 200 miles in fours days, arriving at Nikki’s childhood home in Farnham on the 18th May.

The 18th of May would have been Nikki’s 35th birthday and will be a very special day indead. the travellers, no matter how weary plan to enjoy Nikki’s birthday ’Tea @ Three’ on the day; watch this space for more details on how you can get involved with the Tea yourself.

Please show your support by going to www.justgiving.com/nikkismum and sponsoring the guys whatever you can afford.

Good luck guy’s, bread and cheese is on me!!

On Saturday May 18th Nikki would have celebrated her 35th Birthday so the Trust would like everyone to mark this day in a positive way by holding a’ Nikki’s Birthday Tea @ Three’ wherever you are in the world.

Nikki loved sharing cake and tea with her family and friends especially when served on her mismatched china. So why not remember our lovely girl by hosting your own ‘Nikki’s Birthday ‘Tea @ Three’. All you have to do is invite family, friends, and colleagues to a birthday tea hosted by you. Supply delicious cakes and plenty of tea and encourage your guests to give a donation to Nikki’s Trust.

Nikki had family and friends all over the world and this is a great way for everyone to get involved wherever you live. Don’t worry about the time differences just arrange you tea for May 18th at 3pm. We would like everyone to upload pictures of their event to the Trust’s facebook page (coming soon) so we can all share in everyone’s different experiences.

You may want to hold your tea in an unusual location so get creative, or like Nikki’s crazy aunt invite 50 people to your tea. Nikki’s mum, dad, aunt and uncle, ably supported by Pete and Chris will be on the final leg of the cycle ride for the trust from Paris to Farnham and will have their tea served by Shelly (Nikki’s sister) wherever they are at 3pm. (that could be interesting).

If you would like to host a ‘Nikki’s Birthday Tea @ Three’ and would like to use some of Nikki’s favourite cake recipes, we are putting a few of them together and we will email them to you if you leave your details on the contactus@nikkistrust.co.uk . We will also be able to provide you with The Nikkis Trust wristbands and Trolley coins on a sale or return basis. (see the picture below) They are a £1 for each item so please contact us on the above e-mail address for more information.

Nikki would have loved this event so please get involved celebrate the day and have some fun you know that’s what Nikki would want us all to do.

Megan - Nikki’s 12 year old cousin had to write a story about a message - she choose to tell Nikki’s story and the importance of the HPV Vaccine.

Nikki’s life story!

Nikki was a very happy and lively child. She enjoyed spending time with her family and especially having fun with her sister Shelly.

Nikki always had a smile on her face and immediately brought joy to any occasion with her beautiful smile.

At the age of 23 Nikki got married to Peter Fagg on the 29th of September 2001. It was a great day for family and friends. Not that I remember much because that was my 1st birthday, but by looking at the pictures and stories I have heard, I had fun.

From a young age Nikki had always wanted to have children, she adored them and they adored her. Both Nikki and Pete continued to enjoy married life and were looking forward to a wonderful future.

But at the age of 28 Nikki was diagnosed with cervical cancer. Nikki was then put through courses of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Thankfully this shrunk the cancer and it soon disappeared, but unfortunately this treatment left her unable to have children.

After a long while the all clear was given and Nikki had to have 6 monthly check-ups to ensure the cancer had not returned.

Getting back to their normal life together, Nikki and Pete started to think ahead and began on a massive journey to rebuild a 100 year old windmill that is family heir loom.

Along with this they were planning to look into adoption.

Some years later Nikki went for her 6 month check-up in September 2010 and everything was fine. 5 months later Nikki started getting pains behind her left eye and had severe headaches. Nikki went to the hospital where she had a scan that revealed her cancer had returned. It never occurred to anyone that Nikki would be struck AGAIN with cancer!

During this time Nikki and Pete arranged for the rebuilding of the 100 year old windmill to continue. This huge restoration project was filmed for a TV programme Restoration Man. Unfortunately Nikki did not get to see the finished result as she lost her battle against cancer during the building of the windmill. Though Nikki was not there when the family gathered to see the windmill, it still was amazing and we have a lovely memory of her.

Getting an HPV vaccine

What is a HPV vaccine?

HPV stands for Human Papillomavirus vaccine. There are a number of different types of this virus and different types can cause different diseases including cervical cancer.

HPV vaccination works to help prevent some of these diseases. It can help to prevent against 2 types of HPV, which cause over 70% of cervical cancers in Europe.

The vaccine is administered in 3 separate injections over a period of six months. It is very important that all three doses of the vaccine are received.

The vaccines are recommended for 11 and 12 year old girls and for females from 13 through to 26 who have not received the vaccines when they were younger.

Cancer comes in many forms and there are some ways to help reduce the risk of getting these diseases.

One way that is known to help with the prevention of cancer is a healthy lifestyle and diet. This can be done by maintaining a healthy weight throughout your life, being physically active for 30 minutes a day and control your diet by choosing mostly plant foods, limit red meat and avoid processed meat.

Lots of people smoke and die from Smoking. Unfortunately some people find smoking addictive this may mean they will have a shorter life or get cancer.

When you go outside in the sun always wear sun cream. Even if your friends don’t wear sun cream because it isn’t cool then they have more chance of getting skin cancer. Whatever skin colour you are it does not matter you should still wear sun cream.

Ways you can raise money for cancer charities

Some of the things that I am doing is; growing my hair and cutting over 12inches off and getting people to sponsor me. Once my hair is cut off I will send it off to be made into a wig. I am going to do the race for life, for the second time and do it in pink shorts and crop top with pictures of Nikki on me. I will do some fund raising as well which will go to Nikki’s Trust. This is a charity which Pete has set up in Nikki’s memory, the money that is raised will help older girls who have not had the HPV injection.

My cousin died of cervical cancer. When she was a school girl there was nothing available to reduce her risk of getting this cancer. Now there is an immunisation programme that is available to all school girls from the age of 12 years. It is extremely important that this programme is advertised and young girls are encouraged to have the injections. Although, you may be scared of having injections it is important to get the message across to you that these injections could save your life…just think 3 small injections may have saved Nikki life, had they been available to her!

I hope you have been inspired by my true story?

A huge and exciting step forward for Nikki’s Trust

Following months of hard work and determination we are delighted to announce that Nikki’s Trust achieved charitable status in October 2012. This now means that we can move forward as a charity and continue our campaign to raise awareness for the HPV vaccine and progress with our goal to advance pain control management of bone cancer.

We are thrilled to be in this position but this was only made possible in the first instance with the support and generosity of the ‘Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, Farnham, Surrey. www.pth.org They have enabled us to collect funds through their established channels. Thanks to Phyllis Tuckwell Hopsice and all of last years events arranged by family and friends Nikki’s Trust total fundraising to date stands at an incredible £28,000. This would not have been possible without the continued support and fundraising efforts of so many. As you will have noticed they have been so many ideas and initiatives and this is only the beginning. If you have any great ideas or would like to raise funds for Nikki’s trust please get in touch at contactus@nikki’strust.co.uk we would love to hear from you. Please let us know and we can add you to our events page. Every penny raised will make a difference and ultimately save lives.

Moving Forward to Achieve the Goals the Trust Has Set.

The Trust has been researching and collating information with regards to the goals set by the Trust and is now in a position to update you as to the progress of these objectives.

Pain Control – October 2012

This was one of our primary concerns following Nikki’s journey. We are pleased to announce that the trust has made a grant of over £3,000 for 8 doctors and senior nurses from the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice to attend an ‘advanced pain and symptom management course’. This enables a better understanding and awareness of new techniques that the course provides. This is an important first step to ensure that new techniques stop being just theory and are used to start benefiting patients like Nikki. The trusts is now looking at providing similar training to other Hospices within our area of operation, Kent & Surrey.

Awareness of the HPV Vaccine that can prevent Cervical cancer

September 2012 – Positive Results from Discussions with Production Company

We are very pleased to be working with a production company, looking to start a project on producing a short film which will be shown to all girls aged between 11-16 years in full time education.

We have established that there isn’t a generic source of material that is used to educate girls who are eligible for the vaccine. We feel very passionate that the same message should be clear, concise and relevant and delivered in an appropriate format, therefore as a trust this is something we are looking to achieve as quickly as possible. This will be taken forward to our meeting with the Department for Health in December. We see this as an opportunity to put forward the DVD we plan to produce with the hope this can be rolled out nationwide.

Meeting with Department of Health – December 2012

A meeting was held between the Deputy Head of the Department of Health Immunisations Branch (DoH IB) and the Trustees on 17 December, they discussed issues around cervical cancer and the HPV Vaccine .

Production of DVD

The aims of the DVD were discussed and further meetings are planned to ensure that the DVD will be a useful tool for educating the right target audience and it meets all the goals of the Trust. The trust are also investigating to see if there is a ’mop up’ process in place that ensures that all girls who did not take up the vaccine at a younger age are given the opportunity to re-think their decision before leaving school. The Trust will look at the educational material that is available to this group to enable them to make an informed choice before leaving school.

Access to the vaccine for older girls

We discussed that whilst the vaccination ‘statistically’ is most effective when delivered to 12-13 year olds, it is still ‘medically’ effective in older girls; an older recipient would be safe in the knowledge that they have done everything they can to protect themselves. Currently for recipients over the age of 18 getting the vaccination is a difficult process with many obstacles. Many of these could be removed if the vaccine was to be treated like travel vaccinations; our goal would be to ensure that an older girl wanting to pay for the vaccine could simply go to the GP and walk out with an injection in one arm and an appointment card for two further doses. The DoH IB agreed to investiagte further.

We hope you will agree that alot of positive actions has been going on behind the scenes and this really is thanks to your generosity. We are already making a difference and will be continuing in our efforts, striving to achieve our goals and will keep you updated as we move forward. In the meantime we are thrilled that Nikki’s Trust is officially now an independent charity.

Nikki and I always intended to hold an event ‘faggfest’ when the build was completed; we wanted to say thanks to everyone who had put up with us during the build and say hi to all those friends we’d neglected at the same time. There was no way we could have foreseen the course of events that was to take place, this certainly twisted the incentives slightly, but we were determined that the event would be held all the same.

faggfest took place on the 11th August, it marked the 1st anniversary of Nikki’s passing, giving family, friends and neighbours a chance to remember Nikki, see her influence in the Mill and along the way make over £2,000 for the trust!

The Chris Manley Jazz Trio, Fake Thackray and Trial by Error entertained around 250 invited guests, whilst an army of volunteers delivered cream teas for all. Swampduck and the Simon Langton Soul and Funk Band picked up the pace in the evening.

Very Special guests Matt and Sueleen and Richard Navarro rounded up and amazing day that was enjoyed by all.

With huge thanks to the whole team, special mention to Folkstone Scaffolding, Congo Blue Design and the Bands; the event was everything that Nikki and I hoped for and much much more. Fingers crossed we get to do again.

Nikki clearly made an impression on people at all stages of her life and we are delighted that some of her old school friends have taken up a serious challenge to raise money in Nikki’s memory.

In just a few weeks time Donna, Claire, Annalisa, Lisa, Jo, Dawn, Rob, Emilie and Katie set out to cycle the 100 miles from their old school in Farnham all the way to the Windmill in Kent!

That's no mean feat - Good luck guys!!

We were all sincerely touched by her story…. We wanted to do something to link our days with Nikki as school friends to her life with her husband, Pete, and her family. Therefore, on the 4/5 August 2012 we have decided on an epic 100 miles (160km) cycle ride from Heath End School to her and Pete’s Windmill, Kingston, Kent. This will be a huge challenge for us all but nothing in comparison to the suffering that Nikki endured.

Please vist the team’s JustGiving page here to show your support and donate.

Enjoy the ride guy’s, we look forward to seeing you at the Mill.
